Vishwanath Ganesh Gharpure was an illustrious professor of surgery at the Government Medical Colleges of Nagpur, Aurangabad and Mumbai. He was the first batch of graduates from the Government Medical College, Nagpur and obtained postgraduate training in general surgery from the same institute. He also had special training in neurosurgery from the Christian Medical College, Vellore. He was a visiting professor to the University of Chicago during 1963-64.

VG Gharpure Memorial Foundation was started by his children with an aim to support academic activities in field of surgery. The foundation annually sponsors an oration in the Marathwada Surgical Conference and awards prizes for the best postgraduate theses in surgery.

The VG Gharpure Memorial Foundation has kindly come forward to partly support the publication of the Pediatric Surgery in Tropics journal through a generous donation. The editors and the board members of the PST thankfully acknowledge this noble gesture.
